In a simple equation, variables can be treated independently. You can change one value without altering the nature of the others.
But that model collapses when variables become interdependent.
In interdependent systems:

Relationships are the clearest example. Every interaction reshapes future interactions. Meaning, memory, tone, timing, and history all compound.
This is also why organizations, markets, cultures, and long-term strategies behave the same way.
The “problem” is never just one thing.
Why Prediction Fails Faster Than We Expect
Even in physics—where systems are comparatively clean—prediction breaks down quickly.
A single collision between two billiard balls is easy to model. A second collision becomes harder. After enough interactions, prediction becomes effectively impossible without accounting for an absurd number of variables.
At a certain point, you would need to know the position of every particle in the universe to continue predicting outcomes accurately.
And billiard balls don’t think, adapt, remember, or react emotionally.
Humans do.
So the idea that we can confidently predict outcomes in social, organizational, or strategic systems five or ten years out is not just optimistic—it’s structurally flawed.
The correct response is not paralysis.
It’s humility.
Diagnosis Feels Productive — Even When It Isn’t
People often confuse identifying a problem with making progress.

This feels satisfying because it gives the illusion of clarity. But clarity without leverage changes nothing.

“This may be partly my responsibility—and that means I can act.”
This isn’t self-punishment. It’s strategic positioning.

- Teams that resist otherwise sound processes
The instinct is to suppress anomalies or explain them away.
That’s a mistake.
Anomalies point to misaligned assumptions. They reveal where your map no longer matches the terrain.
Ignoring them preserves comfort.
Investigating them creates leverage.
Going Outside the Box Still Requires a Box
“Thinking outside the box” doesn’t mean abandoning structure. It means stepping into a larger box.
